Session Five: Third filming session – Participatory film-making with young people in Scarborough

LAT 54.28 LNG -0.40

We started session number five with the plan of completing the exploration of the map of Scarborough the young people had produced in session two.

We took our iPads and cameras and headed out, travelling to North Bay. We started with filming the top of North Bay and we then walked down along the beach to capture the colourful beach chalets which are typical of this area.

Young people commented on how the beach is peaceful and relaxing during the winter, even though it’s often too cold to fully enjoy it, while in the summer it becomes extremely busy, with some young people avoiding the area altogether during summer for this reason.

We stopped for a lunch break and to get some respite from the cold wind, and once recharged, we travelled down to South Bay.

Here we explored the dock and captured the street with its many shops, restaurants, and arcades, some of which were closed for the winter.

This walk completed the range of footage we had planned to capture with the young people in Scarborough, so we headed back to the youth organisation and watched a mini-film created by combining clips from our previous walk.

The next few sessions will be dedicated to creating a narrative for the film mixing creative writing with quotes from the research.
